Making the Move…Part 1

On Tuesday November 22, Derek, Alayna and I left Texas and headed for Wisconsin to start the move back. For Alayna and I this was a one-way trip, we moved into my parent’s house in Wind Lake. For Derek, the trip was a “vacation” to get us moved up there and then he had to head back to Texas to get back to work.

We left about 9am on Tuesday with Derek driving the Uhaul and me following in my car with Alayna in the back seat. Between the two vehicles we were packed in like sardines. I wish I would have took a picture of it all, but on the other hand, I don’t really want to remember because it wasn’t all that pleasant.

It took us a bit to get out of DFW because of an accident, but we made decent time regardless. We stopped for lunch around 12:30pm somewhere in Oklahoma. Alayna did great in the car, she fell asleep for about an hour before lunch and then after lunch she slept for at least 2 hours. We stopped for dinner in Springfield, MO around 6pm. We wanted to try to make it to St. Louis in the first day and we had about 3 more hours to go.

Unfortunately, we didn’t quite get to St. Louis on Tuesday. We were all just too tired and I hate driving at night, especially on highways in areas I am not familiar with. So, we spent the night in Sullivan, MO which is about 60 miles west of St. Louis.

On Wednesday we woke up about 8am and got ready and got on the road close to 9am again. We made great time and stopped for lunch around noon in Bloomington, IL. We arrived in Wisconsin around 4:30 on Wednesday night after about a 16 hour total drive.

We relaxed with the family on Wednesday night and all day on Thursday. However, Friday was moving day…moving all of our stuff into storage that is. We decided that because Derek may find a job quickly or our house may rent quickly that it might be better if we just moved everything out of the house so that Derek didn’t have to do it all after I left. However, I never realized how much “stuff” we had accumulated over the past three years to fill our Texas home.

We got storage units (yes, we needed two) on the west side of Madison and headed up on Friday to load everything up. It was not fun to say the least. How we managed to fit everything into those units I will never know. And Thank God for my dad and brother who helped us out and for bringing their truck because a few things had to make the trip back to Milwaukee with us to be stored at my parent’s house because we ran out of room.

To say the past few weeks have been exhausting and draining is an understatement. However, I am trying to keep everything in perspective and know that this is all temporary and is for the best in the end. I just hope that my prayers will be answered and I am right. But, it does feel good to be home, so I guess that is a plus.
