This past holiday weekend I spent my time traveling the East Coast. Now, I wouldn't normally choose this as a vacation destination for myself, however, I couldn't pass up the opprotunity to be a part of Trish's wedding. The travel to get to Maine was eventful to start the trip. I met up with some of Trish's awesome co-workers in Milwaukee to begin our travels. We fly to Newark, NJ for our connecting flight to Portland, ME. In Newark we had some troubles with our connecting flight due to overbooking by the airlines. Kim and her husband Derek were bumped from our flight, but thankfully due to $500 vouchers and some free stuff, they ended up getting on our flight. From there we were on to Portland where we got in a little late (not good when I am in the wedding and the rehearsal is suppose to start in 1 hour and we are 1.5 hours away from our final destination). Anyway, we get our rental car and head off to Boothbay Harbor. We get there just in time for the rehearsal dinner to start (I missed the actual rehearsal) but at least we made it in time for food and drinks. The dinner was fabulous at the Lobster Dock and the drinks and fun at Rocktide afterward was a great time. The weather however, was terrible...foggy, raining and then torential downpour. Oh, and in the middle of this Derek is texting me that his flight to meet me in Maine has been cancelled so he is stuck in NJ waiting for the next connecting flight. Finally with no flights going out anymore that day and being put on stand by for the next day Derek decides to make the 6 hour drive from NJ to ME, which was probably best b/c I don't think he would have gotten in had he waited on the airlines.
On to Friday the 3rd...wedding day!!
We got up early to spend the morning on a cruise around the harbor sponsored by the bride and groom. We saw some beautiful scenery, lighthouses and porpoises. It was very cool. We then got back and gathered in the room to begin our getting ready process. We had some drinks to toast the bride and some tears and then it was time to start the ceremony. Through this entire time it is drizzling and foggy out...not great circumstances for an outdoor wedding. However, Trish was determined to get her dream wedding and thankfully she didn't bend to others urges to move inside because 20 min. before the ceremony started the clouds parted and out came the sun, Yay!!
The ceremony was wonderful filled with love and personality. The weather was awesome and the couple was glowing. The reception to follow was nothing less than we expected, a fabulous time. We had Maine lobster for dinner and whoopie pies for dessert (they are a frosting filled pastry...amazing!). We danced the night away to everything from Spice Girls and Michael Jackson to Buddy Holly and the Twist.
On Saturday, Derek and I decided to get up and drive to Boston to catch the Seattle Mariners play the Boston Red Sox. This was my first trip to Fenway park and that place is amazing, so much history and passionate fans, who were very nice to us even though we were fans of the opposing teams (I guess as long as we weren't Yankee fans we were okay). We spent the day in Boston with Derek's friend Dan and some of his friends checking out Quincy Market and seeing Ben Franklin's grave. We then finished our road trip back to Portland to spend the night and fly back to Milwaukee.
All in all, it was such a wonderful trip but way too short. After seeing the East Coast, I realized why people from there love it so much, all big cities are so close together but then you still have the serenity and scenery of the forests and ocean. It is really a beautiful place. I would like to go back to Boston also and do some more history tours and learn more about the people who founded our great country.
And now....the travel continues. Next is a week in Milwaukee followed by the weekend in Green Bay for my cousin's wedding.
