San Antonio

The weekend of May 14-15 we took a trip down to San Antonio. I was bowling in the women’s state tournament there and Derek had never been to SA so we decided to make the trip down and go a little early so we could do some sight-seeing.

I have been to SA previously when the Badgers played in the Alamo bowl in 2003, but since that was 8 years ago I didn’t remember a ton about the area.

We headed down early Saturday morning and it was about a 4 hour drive. Once we got into downtown San Antonio we found parking and walked to the Alamo. Now, you would think that the Alamo, being such a historic thing in Texas history, would be this big landmark. Well, it is not. It is a small area on this island in the middle of downtown streets. The building that used to be the church is the historic building that is depicted in all the pictures. There are some buildings that use to be the barracks and other buildings, but not much is left of it and it of course has been commercialized with a gift shot and concession stand.

After touring the Alamo for a bit we went to the Riverwalk area to have lunch. I love the Riverwalk. I think it is so neat with all the shops, restaurants and bars and yet the way it is built gives it this historic, old world feel.

Once we were done with lunch we stopped for ice cream and then headed back to the car to check in to our hotel and head to the bowling center. Unfortunately, I didn’t bowl that great, but I had a lot of fun hanging out with the girls and had quite the interesting dining experience when were done. The “best” Mexican restaurant in the city wasn’t anything what we expected, but it was an adventure.
