Training Woes...also know as You know you are getting old when...

In January I signed up to do the Trek Women's Triathlon. It is sprint triathlon; 1/2 mile swim, 12 mile bike, 3.1 mile run. I have wanting to do one of these for years, but there always seemed a conflict in the summer in WI. In Texas, this race is in the middle of May which makes scheduling a bit easier.
So, I have been on a training program for about 6 weeks now. I am doing back to back programs of 8 weeks long so I have 10 weeks left till the race. I know running is and has always been my weakest activity, so I have been working to get faster and have better endurance. Sounds great right....not so much. The sprinting on treadmills has really left my legs in bad shape. I have had bad shin splints for at least 3 weeks now. It is quite frustrating when your training schedule calls for 3 days of running a week.
I decided that since my almost 30 year old body was rejecting the pounding that I would turn to more biking and swimming so I can master those and if I have to walk the 3.1 miles (which I refuse to do). Great idea. But, I unfortunately didn't stop playing softball with my bum legs. I have a pretty high pain tolerance so one day a week of running from base to base was fine. But, then my decreptid body decided that I needed to roll my ankle rounding second base. Sweet. So, now instead of taking time off to heal my shins I now get to add a week or two to the rest with a sprained ankle.
I am too old for this.
