Keeping up with the Jones

One thing I have learned living in Texas is how materialistic people can be here. It has been amazing to watch as people try to "one up" each other with new cars, bigger houses, new toys and gadgets. I just don't get it. They have a term for it down here, people like that are called the $30,000 millionaire because they are ones that make a decent living but then have these huge houses, drive a Lexus or BMW have the Louis Vuitton purse and are dressed to the nines every time they walk out the door.
Derek and I are by no means desolate, however we know how to live within our means. Houses are less expensive down here than they are in WI, however that did not give us an excuse to go above what we would pay for a house in WI. We just happened to be able to get something bigger here. But, it is nothing compared to some of the houses we see driving around. We also like to have a social life, go out with friends, be able to fly home to visit our family and friends so we had no intentions of being "house poor."
I just don't get the fascination of having the house so big you have rooms you don't go in for months at a time, driving cars because of the label on the hood and then a year from now have to sell belongings because you can't afford this lifestyle. No one cares how big your house is, how fast your car goes or that you are wearing the latest designer fashions.
Life my vet (an IL transplant) told me..."In Texas, its either bigger or faster and a lot of times, its both."
How true that is.
